Nutrition before and after cardio?

What is the correct strategy for administering food intake around the time of a long cardio session? Some books and websites say that it's important to eat afterwards to replace the lost glycogen in the liver and the muscles, but my trainer says that anything I eat will be added as fat. Conflict!!

Before.. you need something that will give you energy. Carbs are probably best. Gatorade and other sugars may help. A piece of chocolate can work wonders. After exersise, it's best to consume protein. A good protein bar or piece of chicken breast should do the trick.

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. If you're tying to tone your muscles, you should eat a balance of carbs and protein. Whole-wheat bread with peanut butter and a piece of fruit, for example.

However, if you're going for weight-loss, you should avoid "carbo-loading" before or after the session. That glycogen is used after the body uses all available blood glucode. Once you run out of glycogen, your body turns to fat cells for energy and you actually "lose weight". By eating a high amount of carbs, your body will refill your glycogen stores, use what it needs and convert the rest to fat.

The food intake before and after cardio training should be the same. This means that you should stick to a diet that you are comfortable with and not that stresses you. All foods have fat content however, their amount vary. Stay away from foods that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates as well.
