I have heard all sorts of things about what some companies put into their pet food - can anyone recommend a reputable brand or where I can find some legit info on pet food ingredients?

The product name is the first part of the label noticed by the consumer, and can be a key factor in the consumer's decision to buy the product. For that reason, manufacturers often use fanciful names or other techniques to emphasize a particular aspect. Since many consumers purchase a product based on the presence of a specific ingredient, many product names incorporate the name of an ingredient to highlight its inclusion in the product. The percentages of named ingredients in the total product are dictated by four AAFC rules. If you are interested in researching more about the make up of wholesale dog food this should give you a decent run down. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101

The higher quality the food, the more likely they are to use human-grade or close to human-grade ingredients. Flint River Ranch is a great example of a food that uses human grade ingredients. There aren't very many out there that truly use human grade ingredients, and most of them are very expensive. If you really want control of what your dog is eating, raw meat from the grocery store is the way to go. Dogs don't need the rice and grains and veggies from any of the kibbled dog foods, and as long as you get a chest freezer so you can buy in bulk, it's not nearly as expensive as you might imagine. Otherwise, skip anything you can find at a grocery store, 80% of what you can find at a chain pet store, and find what kind of independent pet food suppliers are in your area. Most independents carry the better quality foods. Yes, you're going to pay more, but just like with our own diets, eating right is an investment into our future, and it's hard to put a price tag on our health. You can't guarantee lower doctor/vet bills with a better diet, but you sure as heck improve the odds.
