Feed it, give it a water source for baths and for drinking, trim it's claws (or get a good perch that does it for you), trim its primary flight feathers unless you plan on letting it out of a cage to fly around your home (I wouldn't advise this as bird poop can stain things). :-) A parakeet or a budgie would probably be good for you. talk to your local pet store owner.

That depends on the bird you want. Basically you will need a cage that allows your bird plenty of room to move around. You will also need a source of fresh water. I use an upside down bottle. You should use a good vitamin in the water. Keep a cuttlebone in the cage. Use a quality seed. My birds in my aviary don,t like pellets. They love fresh veggies and fruit as a treat. Some birds like a Tucan live on sweet fruit and nectar. Thats why I say depends on your bird. All birds love spray millet. It,s a great treat for them. You can use newspaper in the cage bottom as the ink is usually soybean based. Cheapest way to go. If you have doubts contact your local paper and ask if they use non toxic ink. Birds like nuts to break open and eat. It gives them something to do. One important fact......Keep your avian friends wings clipped so it cannot fly away if scared, and show it never ending love.

Before you bring your new bird home, make sure that everything is prepared: that the cage is set up, that you have a supply of food ready, and you have all the information that you need to provide it with proper home. It's a good idea o make an appointment with an avian veterinarian for a "new bird checkup" even before you get the bird, perhaps even arranging it so that you stop at the clinic or office on the way home. If there is a health problem, the sooner you detect it, the easier it is to enforce whatever guarantee the bird came with, andif you need to return the bird, it is much easier to do so before you get to know it and become attached.
