When my daughter first started on solids I opted for making the baby food myself but it got to be such a hassle I started buying the organic foods and she loved them. That was 4 years ago though and they are now a lot more expensive. My son is still a little way from solids but I am curious as to what other parents are doing.

I'd do a combination of the two. When you're home and able to make organic baby food, go for it but don't feel bad about buying prepared stuff. If it's certified as organic and is a brand name you trust, you're good! Baby food is vacuum sealed in glass jars and without preservatives when it's marked as organic so I'd feel very comfortable doing it. Whenever your family is making fresh vegetables for dinner, and it's something your baby can have, I'd make good use of it and consider pureeing it and storing in ice cube trays (covered in heavy freezer bags) as well.
Cheers,
