Prior to 1998, Interferon Alpha was used to battle the infected cells in the liver with only about 50% of patients getting better with the treatment.

In 1998, researchers added Ribavirin an anti-viral drug, this combination therapy was shown to better lower the amount of hepatitis in the blood stream and further testing after 6 months of treatment showed that 45% of people tested still had very low levels of hepatitis in the blood stream.

In 2001 a report from the  Digest Disease week Conference indicated that a new combination a was available. Interferon/Ribavirin attached to a chemical called polyethylene glycol or PEG. Basically, PEG causes the combination therapy drugs to through the body slower making it more effective and reducing the number of injections from daily to weekly. It has also been shown to be more effective at eliminating the Hep C virus from patients liver.

It depends on if you are taling about Hep A, Hep B or Hep C. You can be immunised against them all. However once you contract them, while Hep A can be cured, Hep B and Hep C have to be lived with till you die. Some treatment may take away the repeated symptoms, but in most cases the virus stays with the patient
