Of course it depends on what kind of stain it is but if it is something like grape juice the best advice I would say is DON't scrub it!  Scrubbing will set in the stain and make it harder to get out.  Pour a little water on it and grab a sponge or absorbent towel and just press on it to absorb as much as possible.  For simple, non-chemical stains this will usually work if you get at it right away.

Salt is the best for getting red wine out of carpet and or clothes! but you need to coat the area in salt and then let is soak for 5-6 hours then gently wipe away the salt with a damp cloth.

For most stains, you can also try a can of club soda. Soak the area with club soda, let sit for a minute and then grab an absorbent cloth (microfibre works best) and just press it in until it soaks it all up. It works for most organic stains but for long-time really set-in stains, you may have to repeat the procedure a couple times.

One can mix lemon juice along with common salt to get rid of tough stains on carpets. White Vinegar is also a alternative for this.

I have children and puppies and have discovered the best secret for removing many stains!  I've tried all the carpet cleaners and they work ok, but my secret is Shout Stain remover for laundry.  Just spray it on and allow it to soak a minute, then scrub away the stain!

That depends on what kind if stain it is. If it something protein based, such as blood and other bodily fluids, hydrogen peroxide works wonders. Do not scrub it until the stain has been lifted out.

i use diluted white vinegar for most of stains, especially carpet stains, letting it soak then scrubbing it until the stain disappears. it's also good for rust  but you have to soak it overnight.
