I am hoping to invest some savings in the sharemarket and there are a couple of companies I am interested in but want to be sure about my decisions. If I talk to an investment advisor, how can I trust their suggestions?

You can start checking the background of the investor and get any feedback from other clients about his sales experience and reputation. If everything looks great then trust him only in a small part of what he tells you to invest in.Check other investment advisors for other opinions too.

Start reading. There are a couple of good books out there for beginners. You should also start reading the business/money section of newspapers to you are up to speed on the companies you are looking at investing in. I would recommend speaking with an advisor though - maybe through a friend or someone you know. And make sure you are comfortable with the risk. Whatever you do you want to make sure you don't put all your savings into one thing - investments with different liquidity is important. How easily can you access your investment and turn it into cash if you need it?
