Knowing what your worth is a start. Be confident - you want to communicate clearly what you want without sounding pushy. You should be comfortable articulating just how much you are after. Be prepared - do your homework. And avoid being emotional & getting defensive if the review isn't going as you hoped. It comes down to basic negotiating skills - something that traditionally men have more experience of than women. That and a lack of confidence in our abilities. Often a confident women is seen as being aggressive, characterised negatively. It might take a conscious effort to alter a habitual way of thinking but if we don't ask for something, we can't expect to get it.
