Bleeding gums is generally a sign of poor dental hygine. I'm not saying you don't brush your teeth but there are a few things you can do to improve the health and hygine of your teeth and gums.

  • Flossing is really important & should be done at least once a day. It can be useful to get a dental hygineist to show you the correct technique. This helps to shift bacteria in your gums which can lead to gingivitis. They may bleed a bit when you first start but this should improve shortley.
  • Use an electric toothbrush - particulary good for those of us who tend to brush aggresively.
  • Eat less sugar - sugar is the lead cause of plaque on our teeth.
  • If you can afford to, I advise you to visit your dentist twice a year - consider it an investment. Avoid painful toothache - you've only got the one set!

Sometimes bleeding gums can be caused by medications or low immune system. It is also common to experience bleeding gums during pregnancy. Try flossing and taking more care with your teeth for a few weeks and if still suffering from excesive bleeding perhaps visit your doctor or dentist to see if there is another possible cause.

Bleeding gums can also signify a lack of proper nutrition. If you increase your vitamin C intake, this can help solve the problem. This is assuming you brush and floss regularly.

One of the most common reasons for bleeding gums is that you are using a toothbrush that is too hard for your teeth. Make sure that you choose a soft or medium toothbrush, because your gums bleed where the gum has been worn away from the edges of the teeth.

Switching to a softer toothbrush will allow the gums to heal back, albeit slowly, around the edges of your teeth, and they will stop bleeding.

If they continue to bleed make sure you go to the dentist, and make regular check ups. At home, rinse your mouth out with warm salty water to heal any currently open wounds.

Bleeding gums can be caused by various types of problems like gingivitis or low sodium fluoride. The best thing to do is have it checked by an expert like a dentist or an orthodontist cause this may also involve some disease.
