If a product or company promotes itself as being or operating sustainably, what actually constitutes that? I'm presuming they must be adhering to some kind of clear practice or definition..

To be sustainable, products must be harvested in such a manner that the harvest does not take out more than the habitat or environment can continue to reproduce. To my knowledge there is not a specific law that mandates guidelines for a company to claim sustainability.
When a company indicates they are sustainable, they may be going to great lengths or they may just be doing the bare minimum to say they are sustainable. I would investigate the company by asking exactly how they are working towards sustainability.

The definition of sustainability is a characteristic of a process or state that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely. In order for a product or company to promote itself as being sustainable, there must be some kind of environmental, social and economic benefit. Sustainable products are produced with minimal energy and packaging. They are considered eco-friendly as they cause no harm to the environment throughout their entire life cycle. A business or organisation that integrates sustainability into it's operations is recognising it's responsibility toward the impact they or their products have on the environment. Many businesses are leaning toward sustainable development as many consumers are actively seeking greener products and services.
