What happens to all the out of date computer's?

Surely they must contain parts that would be of some use to somebody? Or are they mostly just turfed?

According to the Website of an organization called Computer Aid International, in the UK alone approximately 3-million computers a year become obsolete. many of which are still operable. As far as I know - watched a documentary on these guys!! - they not only supply schools & colleges in countries such as Kenya & Ghana, they also employ disadvantaged workers in the UK who benefit by learning the skills involved in repairing computer's. (Apparently efforts to get computers into schools in South Africa were hindered due to lack of support from the local government who felt the computers were 'inferior' and that Africa was being used as a 'dumping ground' for obsolete technologies.....)

I have heard of some companies donating outdated computers & equipment to schools & students. There are also some who donate replaced products to areas, schools and institutions in countries less well off that are unable to fund the cost of purchasing new equipment. One of the better uses for last years model surely!

There are still lots of junked computer parts. I don't know what they were doing to those but I think they are just doing a buy and sell business. Though some parts are still useable even if it is out of date. An example is an HP 45, not all of us can afford upgrading their computers every time there are newly released and better computer specs.

Several third world coutries recyle the old comuters for the metals(Copper, Gold etc.) About a year ago this companies were mad because there was talk of making greener computers. This would put them out of business.
