Setting up your first aquarium

For a beginner, a small 5 gallon aquarium is a good starter.  Most people want to get everything and just put it all in the aquarium and get it going in one day.  This can be detrimental for the fish.  First, you should buy the gravel, aquarium, filter, and any decor.  Before putting anything in the aquarium rinse the decor and gravel to get dust off of it.  Then place it where you want it in the aquarium.  After that put the water in, make sure it is dechlorinated water.  You can get dechlorinater from the store to put in regular tap water and make it safe.  Let the aquarium run like this without fish for a few days to let everything settle.  After doing this you can go get a fish.  If you are wanting a tropical fish you will also need a heater in the aquarium to keep the water around 75 degrees or so, depending on the fish.
