Dear readers, how many of you have taken a degree that was imposed upon you by your parents? Or, how many among you have taken a degree that was because of a bandwagon mentality among your peers in high school?
Because in our place, most people have taken up nursing. Now it's not that I'm attacking the nursing profession. Nursing is a noble profession as it helps sick people and the elderly. In fact, without nurses, doctors would have real trouble curing the sick.
But there are other reasons why many have taken up nursing nowadays. It is almost because of the booming demand in the early 20th century which boasts infinitely unfilled vacancies in many countries which offers staggering wages. If you want money, of course it would be a good choice to pursue that career.
But now, there are over 400,000 unemployed 'registered' nurses in our country alone. Why was it? Because even as the foreign demand waned, people still pursued the career out of peer or parental pressure, along side nursing schools who mercilessly mislead enrollees that demand is still high. Many ended up in call centers, english tutorials, among others although there were still vacancies in the local hospitals, but with a low wage.
Now, if you have taken nursing as a passion, you wouldn't mind working for a low wage in a local hospital, if your 'intention' is to help sickly people. The problem is, these 400,000 unemployed registered nurses' intention is 'money' which these local hospitals simply cannot offer. That is why they are ignoring their hard-earned 4-year degree because foreign demand is getting lower.
Most of these registered nurses I know were of great minds. I mean, they were my classmates in highschool and they were good in the sciences and maths. Some were good artists. If only they could follow their hearts 4 years ago and obtain a degree of their liking, even if the demand is low as long as their is passion in the career, they could be basking in success right now.
The point is, High Wage + No Passion = Low quality Work + Big Money
Lower Wage + Great Passion = High Quality Work + Not So Big Money
Now when you choose the first one, and now you have money, so what? Have you been enjoying your past years? Money will not make you happy. It is what you do that makes you happy.
So as a piece of advice to upcoming professionals, follow your hearts and obtain a degree you 'feel' you're most inclined at or where you feel you will become really successful. Let your parents understand and assure them that you'll be successful in your own way.
Have a good day.
