Environment Friendly House

You planned to build your own house, and knowing the danger of global warming, you want your house to be an environmentally friendly one. But you do not have much land to begin with for the house, let alone for a nice garden to support the environment idea. Because are not more green areas equals more environment friendly?

Just like not all that glitters are gold, having big garden is also not the only way to make your dream house environmentally friendly. How? Let us start by breaking down bits that make a house a house.

First, of course, is room. Be it living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, a house definitely has those. A house is a group of rooms assembling together, serving the other room with its own capacity. I am sure you already know what rooms you want to be in your dream house of. Now let us list them all in a piece of paper. Look at the list once you have done taking note. The question is, do we really need all those rooms? Can we not integrate a certain room to another room? Do we really need both study room and library room? If we can shorten the list and integrate the rooms, we can reduce the materials used in building the house and the building process.

Do not forget to arm the room with high ceilings. High ceilings can make the room fresher and it can give the impression of a big room.

But let us not stop at that. The next thing we have to take a look at is the lightning. Dim lighted house never looks good and it makes us harder to do our daily chores when there are not much of light. So make sure that the house has enough wide openings. When we have enough opening to let the sun shine get through our house, we are not going to need electricity as much as we do previously.

Then, let us not forget about the air quality of the house. The wide openings mentioned previously, can also bring the air from outside of the house. Make sure you have a well-placed ventilation system to make sure that the air from outside and the air from inside are well circulated.

The four things mentioned above are just the basic tips on how to make your house environmentally friendly even without the existence of a garden. If the area and or the circumstances are not supporting the above-mentioned basic tips, do a twist on them.

Like what happen to my grandparents’ one-storey house. It has window in every room, but the windows, including the one in the living room, cannot catch the sun shine. But the house had a chimney-like opening in the ceiling in every room. This ‘chimney’ reached up to the roof where we put transparent roof. That way we are able to get the sun shine inside a room.

Never hesitate to be creative. It is your dream house anyway, so make it yours.
