Qualifications to Be a Federal Game Warden

A federal game warden has the ability to travel around the county or state. Most game wardens work out of their own homes and use vehicles that are supplied by the state to travel around the area to keep an eye out for violators of fishing and hunting regulations and to inspect forest and parks for any damage or potentially dangerous situations. Game wardens do act as law enforcement officers while on duty.

Schooling

Federal and state game wardens do not need any special schooling in some states, but if a person wants to increase his or her chances of being accepted, a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Environmental Sciences or in Biology does weigh more with the review board. Some states that do require a degree will want a 4-year degree, but this can be waved for a 2 year associated degree and some type of law enforcement or fish and wildlife experience.

Miscellaneous

Candidates for a game warden position cannot have any felonies on their criminal record. Some states allow persons that are 18 years of age to apply, but some states will require candidates to be 21 years of age or older. Any person applying for the game warden position must have a valid driver's license and no previous DUI convictions. Both male and female applicants are accepted for federal and state game warden positions.

Physical Condition

Game wardens should be in good physical condition. As with any position of authority, a strong physical condition is warranted since the warden is sometimes expected to perform some types of physical labor and give chase if necessary. Some states may require a physical check up before the candidate is accepted for work.

Outdoor Knowledge

Candidates that have knowledge of the outdoors will have a good chance of being considered for the position more so than someone that has no experience or knowledge of the outdoors. Knowledge of hunting and fishing laws as well as the resources the land provides is a plus for any candidate.

Internships

People that have worked in parks and forest during internships have the experience that a game warden must display. Some states and colleges have a list of summer internships that will help you in law enforcement, outdoor recreation and resource management.
