Liposuction is a procedure that sculpts the body and removes excess fat from the selected parts of the body. Liposuction also known as "lipoplasty" is commonly performed on the hips, abdomen, buttocks, the inner and outer thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. The main purpose of liposuction is to remove any excess fat that a person cannot get rid of by regular exercise and diet.
People who are good candidates for liposuction should be in good physical health. They should have no medical problems like heart disease, diabetes, etc. You should also have a normal amount of weight and also firm skin with just pockets of fat in some areas.
Different types of liposuction are tumescent, super-wet and ultrasound-assited liposuction or (UAL). You will talk to your surgeon to help you decide which type of liposuction is best for you.
When you go to your appointment with the surgeon, a qualified doctor will evaluate your health and see where your fat deposits are and check the condition of your skin. You and your doctor will talk about which type of liposuction procedure is best for you. Your doctor will also discuss any possible risks or complications that can arise with liposuction. Possible risks could be: Blood clots or fat clots, healing delays, irregularities with the skin, aesthetic risks or being dissatisfied with the results.
Liposuction can be performed in a hospital, office-based facility, or an outpatient surgery center. The anesthesia used during your surgery will depend on the type of liposuction you choose and the area or areas where you receive treatment. Different kinds of anesthesia can be either local anesthesia, which will only numb the affected areas, or general anesthesia, which will put you completely to sleep.
During traditional liposuction, the surgeon will make an incision in the selected area and insert a tube called a cannula; this pushes through the fat layers, breaks up the fat cells and then suctions them out.
After surgery you may experience some fluid drainage. This is normal. You will have an elastic garment which will be used to prevent any swelling. It is normal to experience bruising, swelling and temporary numbness and also fluid fluctuations. There is also the possibility of some weight gain. In about four to six weeks after you have had your liposuction surgery, the bruising and swelling will subside. This is when you will start to see a slimmer body and better contoured skin which will continue to improve over the next year.
