If you need to put a new fuel pump in your Dodge Ram, follow these steps.

Steps

  1. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the truck from rolling.
  2. Release the fuel system pressure by pushing on the Schrader valve located on the fuel rail.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the battery.
  4. Open the fuel door and remove the 3 screws from the filler neck.
  5. Go under the truck and remove the filler hose and vent hose from neck; you will see the hose clamps you need to loosen. Loosen them and pull the filler neck from the bottom of the truck and remove it from the hoses.
  6. Put your siphon hose inside the big fuel hose going inside the tank. It is very important that you drain as much as you can from the tank; doing this will make it very easy to lower and install the tank. You will not need a jack stand or jack to support it.
  7. Get to where you can see the connections going to the fuel pump and remove them. This is easy to do now and get it out of the way.
  8. Get a 15mm socket and an extension and climb under the truck and position yourself under the tank. Using your knees as a support, begin to loosen the 2 bolts from the straps. Once you have removed them, pull the straps down and remove the heat shield from the side of the tank.
  9. Remove the rear tank strap from the truck. You can see how to do this by looking at the bracket it is hooked into.
  10. Bring the tank down and remove the front tank strap; this will make it easier to bring the tank out from under the truck. Pull it out and clean around the area of the fuel pump with hot water and soap. Remove the pump and install the new one, being careful not to bend the float.
  11. Retrace your steps to re-install the tank.

Tips

  • Drain the fuel tank before removal.

Warnings

  • Be careful on the electrical connection going to the pump. Pull the red tab and then you will have to release two sets of ears to release the plug.
  • Make sure to securely chock the wheels to prevent the truck from rolling

Things You'll Need

  • Phillps screw driver.
  • Flathead screw driver.
  • Pliers.
  • 15mm socket
  • 1/2inch socket for battery terminal.
  • Syphon.
  • WD-40 or similar, to spray on rusted nuts.

This is a great thing to read on how to replace the fuel pump of the Dodge Ram. If you may add up some aftermarket truck parts on that one, I'm sure that the performance of a Ram would sure work out well. Great read to say the least!
