Starting an organic garden can be a bit overwhelming; the tips I have included below can help you to decide what type of gardening you would like to do as well as some information on spacing in your garden. These are just basic tips to get you on the road to growing your own vegetables. Once you have decide what type of planting you would like to do, get detailed information from your local nursery – they will be more than happy to assist you.

Spacing:

Many of the conventional spacing’s are wasteful and unnecessary, often resulting in vegetables such as cabbage and lettuce being too large for the average family for one meal. Closer spacing of a wide range of vegetables results in bigger amounts of more convenient-sized plants. It is important to realise, however, that closer spacing’s need sufficiently high soil fertility to maintain the increased plant population. Closer spacing may also involve some alteration in the layout of a vegetable garden. In order to make sure you have sufficient spacing please check the seed packages they will give information on the basic garden spacing needed, if you are still unsure consult with your nursery for information.

The different types of ways you can grow your vegetables:

Most vegetable gardens are planted in an open section of your yard or garden but there are other alternatives like hydro-growing, greenhouses and tunnels.

Hydro-growing: Hydro-growing is a simplified form of hydroponics – growing plants without soil – suitable for greenhouses, tunnels and patios receiving adequate sun – a minimum of six hours of sun a day. This is an interesting and rewarding way of growing vegetables and it is often possible to extend cropping of summer vegetables into winter if there is protection from frost. Hydro-growing can be complicated and costly but be very rewarding in regards to crops.

Greenhouse and tunnels: The potential for producing more from a square meter in tunnels and greenhouses is beyond doubt. Crops grown under protection consistently give higher amounts. They can also extend seasons, particularly when heat is used. An early start in late winter may mean an extra crop through the following months. It is also possible to extend summer cropping programs well into winter. Costs must be taken into account, however. Added to the cost of the units, consideration should be given to the merits or otherwise of installing heating and the cost of using it. Other points to be considered are the replacing of tunnel plastics every few years, soil fumigation costs or, alternatively, using plastic planting bags or grow bags. In order to merit the expense of small tunnel or greenhouse, they would need to be in production throughout the year, but they can add yet another dimension to intensive vegetable gardening.

Whatever type of gardening you choose to start with have fun end enjoy your garden. Thank you for reading this article.
