Stumbling upon the
idea of being green, most of us probably think that the closest thing we can
contribute to the movement is by cutting our electricity bill. We will either
buy new electronic appliances in exchange of our old, excessive electricity consumption
appliances, or looking for ways to cut the bill even with the old ones.
Some of us probably go the next level and design their house as green as possible. But mostly, we forgot to think about the furniture. Though strangely, furniture is also the biggest thing we come in contact in our home.
Furniture sure can speak volumes of its owner’s personality. It can either create a busy, cozy or cramped ambiance. It can also let our guest knows our approach to nature and to our own health. Why, do you know what construct your furniture? Do you know how healthy or environmentally friendly the furniture you are using?
Parts of the
furniture, like its adhesive, varnish, or the foam cushion, might have been
made with toxic chemical that could emit harmful chemicals substances into our
home. Some of the chemicals substance emitted found to be related to cancer. So
it is imperative that you should know the way your furniture is being
manufactured by checking on the manufacturer.
Aside from making sure there will be little to none chemical substance in our furniture, by checking the manufacturer that made the furniture we will also know the approach of the manufacturer toward the environment. Make sure to keep away from manufacturer that produces excessive manufacturing waste or known for its un-environmentally friendly policies.
If you are looking for wood furniture, look for the seal of approval from The Forest Stewardship Council or other certifier. This will guarantees you that the wood which creates the furniture comes from tree that has been specifically planted to be used in wood-based products creation, exposed to minimal chemical, or comes from a sustainable-y harvested forest.
If the wood furniture you interested in has no seal of approval from the FSC, found local, small manufacturer who manufactures wood furniture using left over, discarded wood item and gave them the design of the furniture that you want. They can build you one that will give no harm to the environment. Do not worry about the quality because being a small manufacturer, they know that quality is important if they want to have more customer. And even if something bad happen to the furniture they built for you, you can easily comes back and asked them about it compares to the big heavy bureaucracy of big manufacturer customer service.
If you are still worry about the quality of the wood form the local manufacturer, go to your attic to find a source of good wood furniture. Wood furniture from the old days usually made from the highest quality of wood. So the next time your mother called and says that she has a lovely wood furniture from your grandmother’s era, check on it first before saying no. Who knows what you can make out of it.
