Our big city life is dominated by the color of blue or gray. Sometimes there are yellowish tinge from the neon lamp, but green is definitely a rare color, especially if the big city we live in has little or no park.  With only a little plot of land left in our house, is there something we can do with it?

There are lots of thing you can do with your land, no matter its size. A garden defines by the way you look at it, not by its space. If what you need is a little green haven from your blue and gray life, surely you don’t need garden as big as the Versailles’.

Let us start with what you want the garden to look like. Yes, you want it to be your little green haven, but be more specific on the detail. Do you want it to have devotional place? Do you want it to be enjoyable for the whole family? Do you want a place where you can teach your children to appreciate plantation? Be specific.

Draw your expectation or write it or do both. After you finish the drawing, bring it out and placed it side by side in your eyesight with the land site. Plant the idea of the drawing into the vision of the land site as if you have made the garden already. And then look at what is currently happening to the site.

Because we know how much important a sun is, check whether the site receive enough sun or if there are other structures nearby (other house or other building) that might hinder the sun’s contact to the site?

Don’t forget to check the pH and texture of the soil of your land site to ensure you can plant the plantation you want to plant there, or if you cannot plant them, what other plant can grow there. If you live in a four season country, take advantage of it by planting plants unique to each season so that your garden never lose its color.

Lastly, tries to fit the development of your garden to your budget and time allotment. It is best to complete your garden in various stages. Not only will it be better for your wallet, it will also be best if you don’t have much time to spare for the garden. Enjoy your work in the garden and don’t be discourage when you found that most people didn’t find the result nearly as entertaining as it is to you. It is your own haven after all.

So the next time you feel jealous when you look at that fabulous big garden in the countryside as the centerfold of your magazine, just look at the window and inhale the beautiful scenery of your own garden. Aren’t the flowers looks even more beautiful if you plant them with your own hand? And if there’s a little bit of jealousy left, just remember that big garden requires more time to clean it up!
