Tata Nano: The World’s Cheapest Car

The world’s cheapest car was unveiled Last Thursday in India. This car has been widely expected to enter into the market since the beginning of last year and was expected to cost a mere $2,500. It is hoped that this car will be a crucial source of automotive experience to the average Indian. Anticipation has been very high since the beginning of the expo that introduced the car into the New Delhi Auto Expo at the beginning of this week.

The company was quick to announce that the car is not at all a concept automobile. He announced that production in large scale would begin later this year at the Singur plant.

The Nano model has four doors. It is about 10 feet long and not more than 5 feet wide. The 623cc engine with a two-cylinder format is at the back of this car. It comes with 33 horse power. It is capable of covering up to 65 miles in one hour. The four wheels are at the furthest corner of the car to make handling easier.

Dubbed “The People’s Car”, Tata Nano is a model that meets the safety standards in an environmentally changing world. Its fuel consumption and emission norms are also of very acceptable standards. The price for the model is expected to level at 120,000 rupees although those who need of higher-level models will have to pay slightly more.

The competitor that comes closest to this model is Maruti 800 which is about twice the price of Nano. The Maruti model is 8 per cent smaller though. Makers of other models are worried that this car is going to bring a shift in market trends, with traditionally preferred makes losing taste among mainstream Indians.

Tata says that it expects to be producing about 250,000 cars every year. Other markets it targets to venture into with four years to come are found in South East Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Although this car will bring ownership of cars to millions of poor individuals, it raises grave environmental concerns. There will be so many cars all over the world and this might overshadow the environmental safety precautions the car maker claims have taken great care of.  Foreigners have been assured that the car meets international safety standards and they will not be any more polluted as a result of the entry of such a cheap car into the world market.

This model is in sharp contrast with the luxury models that Tata is planning to acquire from Ford Motors. The models are Land rover and Jaguar. Environmentalists are worried by the upsurge in the number of cars that are going to congest the Indian roads within the period of only one year. It is the emissions that are raising the greatest concern.

Asia’s third largest economy may find itself in the middle of an environmental crisis that will make legislation the only way out for environmental sustainability. The concern has been made into a more immediate issue for the world to debate about since oil prices are on the increase while the worldwide campaign among many is towards use of bio fuels.
