The health benefits of massage

While booking a regular massage session seems like more of an indulgence than an investment, a good massage can do a whole lot more than just relax tired or strained muscles.

An increasing ammount of research suggests massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, assists with insomnia, boosts the immune system AND increases endorphins.

More and more health professionals are encouraging their patients to seek a good massage therapist for a number of health ailiments. A major component of practicing good health used by many cultures for hundreds of years, (China, Thailand and India to name a few), is finally been recognised by medical professionals in Western societies.

There are a number of different types of massage, depending on need or pregference.

Swedish - usually gentle using gliding strokes and kneading. A popular form of relaxing massage.

Deep Tissue - more active and intense. It is often used for long-lasting muscle tension. The therapist may use fingers, thumbs, and elbows to reach and loosen deeper layers of muscle tissue.

Trigger Point massage - can sometimes be uncomfortable. The therapist applies firm pressure to knots or tight, tense muscles that have been overused or injured.

Sports massage - often used for athletes or to treat a muscle injury and can lead to a more complete recovery. A regular massage may assist in the prevention of muscle starin or injury, as it stimulates blood flow and releases build up of lactic acid.

Like exercise, massage is most beneficial when engaged regualry. Even a monthly massage session can benefit overall health.
