Stress simply put, is a state of being under positive or negative pressure. This could be mentally, physically or emotionally.

Stress has several adverse effects on the victim such ranging from recurring migraines, depression, diarrhea, cancer, stomach ulcer, low sexual drive, memory loss, aggression, etc.

Stress also causes some persons to imbibe negative lifestyle behaviours, like over or under-eating, smoking, drinking excessively.

Diseases of the heart are not an exception to effects of stress. High blood pressure and palpitations can result from long term stress. It has been proved that tension of stress can damage arteries and at the same time, reduce the flow of oxygen and healthy blood. Since the human body is uniquely designed to fight off certain malfunctions on their own, your system becomes stress from attempts to heal the damaged arteries which may in turn form scars that thickens the walls of the artery; this in turn reduces the normal flow of blood and oxygen and could lead to fatal heart attack.

Depletion of the immune system is another negative effect of stress on the body. As a result of this depletion, the victim is prone to frequent colds and flu’s.

Stress Management.

First and most importantly, try to understand the sources of your stress. When you understand the sources, you can now make effort towards managing it. Try to find out if your present lifestyle is the cause of the stress. Also, analyze your eating habit or diet, regular consumption of fast foods and fatty foods also trigger stress in the body.

Exercise has always been the number one recommended method of stress management. This form of stress management is recommended because when carried out regularly, it oxygenates the body tissues, helps the normal functioning of the immune system, releases healthy endorphins from the brain and also leaves you feeling light minded and refreshed.

Another recommended method is rest. Making out time to sleep or rest for a few minutes refreshes both the body and the mind.

Massage is also recommended as a way of relieving or managing stress. It relieves muscle stress and to a great extent increases the circulation of lymph in ones body or system which aids in the release of impurities and toxins from the body.

Another method is engaging often in things that interest you like reading, hunting, camping, hiking or fishing. It helps in taking ones mind off certain issues that causes stress.

Meditation is also a stress management method because in meditating, it clears your mind of worries and helps you to concentrate more on working towards ridding your entire system of stress. It also reduces your heart beat rate to a normal rate even if for just a few minutes.

If after attempts on these stress management methods and there is no improvement, then it’s time to consult a physician. The physician can carry out series of laboratory and diagnostic tests to determine the causes of the stress. The earlier you start managing that stress, the better for a longer lifespan.
